This paper examines the potential impact that a move away from fossil fuels could have on employment in the area of energy supply in the EU. To do this, the authors analyze the quantitative (number of jobs) and qualitative (qualification levels) impact on employment in extraction and processing of fossil fuels and in the power sector for the years 2020, 2030 and 2050. They suggest that the energy sector will provide not only more jobs as the transition away from fossil fuels unfolds, but also jobs requiring higher-level qualifications when compared with the energy sector as it exists today.
