In light of an examination of the frameworks which drove Germany’s energy policy before and after reunification, this paper looks at developments for organizing a sustainable national energy supply in the post reunification period. The author believes that the two most important developments are (a) liberalizing the markets for grid-bound energy carriers; and (b) Germany’s "Energy Turnaround" after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011, i.e. Germany’s plans to abandon nuclear power by 2022. He also provides detailed information on the implementation of the “Energy Turnaround” and concludes by identifying related risks and opportunities.
