This commentary examines whether the Europe of 2014 is as vulnerable to potential cuts in Russian gas supplies as it was when supplies where disrupted in 2009. The authors argue that while Russia is highly dependent on its gas exports to Europe, Europe is now in a position where it could resort to alternatives to Russian gas. They also say that since 2009, Europe has become much better prepared for potential short-term supply disruptions to its gas supply.
