This brief argues that the events of the Arab Spring are leading to the disintegration of states in the Middle East, and analyzes the potential impact of this on Israel, both in terms of threats and opportunities. The authors first review the impact of regional upheavals on Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, all of which are experiencing inter-ethnic, tribal or religious conflicts. They then argue this will lead to border changes and comment on what this would mean for Israel’s strategic situation.
