This brief questions the Israeli defense establishment's proposal to stop the distribution of gas masks for personal protection against chemical weapons. The authors first review the origins of the gas mask distribution project, its justifications, shortcomings, and the controversies that have surrounded it. They then use the threat posed by Syria to the population of Israel and the investments already made in the project to challenge the proposal to shut the project down.
