In light of the interim agreement reached in Geneva 2013 on the Iranian nuclear program, this brief reviews relevant lessons learned from previous nuclear negotiations. The author first presents the influence of the Iraq war on the decision by the P5+1 to use diplomacy in Iran, and the consequences of this decision. She then reviews negotiations with other proliferators, particularly North Korea, to draw out a fundamental lesson: the existence of credible leverage is paramount and should not be squandered.
