This paper looks at the upcoming 2014 elections in Egypt and the impact of events taking place since the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood by the military in June 2013. It suggests clashes between the Brotherhood and security forces and increasing activity by Islamist groups have led to unprecedented violence. The author contends the outcome of this situation is unclear, as the Brotherhood could either launch a comprehensive struggle to try to regain power - sending the country into chaos - or renounce its claims and join the government. He predicts that unless the government finds a way to negotiate with the group, the Brotherhood’s ‘middle option’ approach of limited violence will continue.
