This commentary analyzes the state of democracy in Macedonia ahead of the country's April 2014 presidential and parliamentary elections. After briefly discussing Serbia’s March 2014 parliamentary elections, the author focuses on the failure of democratic checks and balances in Macedonia, in particular with regards to the electoral process and the use of intimidation tactics by the governing party against those who criticize it. He also talks about the implications of this for the EU's enlargement strategy arguing that the strategy should prioritize not just economic, but also political governance as a condition for accession.
