This commentary analyzes the significance of Ukraine as a transit country for Russian gas going to the EU. The authors explain that in 2009 gas disputes between Moscow and Kyiv led to a suspension of Russian gas deliveries to Ukraine, resulting in supply disruptions in 12 EU member states. However, they suggest that the changes made since then mean a suspension of Russian gas supplies to Ukraine is unlikely to have a significant impact on the Union. This is due to Europe’s strengthened gas supply security regulations and Russia’s diversification of its export routes.
