This commentary analyzes the potential challenges the 2013/14 crisis in Ukraine raises regarding the movement of people to the EU. The authors highlight the possibility that political upheaval in Ukraine could lead to economic deterioration in the country, ultimately increasing migration to the EU. They argue that the EU must keep its borders open and facilitate economic mobility for economic purposes with Ukraine to alleviate the hardship that is likely to come. They also identify the forms of economic activity that the EU should accommodate - local trading, services provision and employment - and suggest how to do so.
