This paper discusses three international events – the Sochi Olympic games, the political crisis in the Ukraine, and the international conference on the crisis in Syria in Geneva in 2014 – and examines Russia's geopolitical objectives behind each event. The author also examines the challenges Russia faces in the pursuit of its foreign policy objectives, particularly with regard to the Middle East and Ukraine.
