This paper examines the potential implications of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea on a potential secessionist movement in Kárpátalja, a region in western Ukraine in which some 162,000 ethnic Hungarians live. It also discusses the role national loyalties, identity, language and history play in influencing ethnic communities’ secessionist desires.
