This study discusses Bangladesh and its acceptance of foreign aid since it gained independence from Pakistan in 1971. In particular, the author examines the country’s need for external assistance following independence; its sources of aid; and the pressures exerted on Bangladesh by donors in their provision of aid and the implications of aid for the country’s economic sovereignty. He also explores domestic debates in Bangladesh on aid and the ramifications the country's acceptance of aid has had for its external relations.
