This paper discusses the announcement by Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of al Qaeda, that he is severing ties with the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS). In doing so, the authors examine the activities of ISIS and how they have increasingly come into conflict with other Islamist groups as well as the implications which this infighting could have for Syria, the West and Israel.
