This paper discusses the state of political Islam movements across the Middle East and North Africa as well as the rift among the Gulf states in terms of their attitude towards these movements. After charting the position of political Islam actors such as the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups in the Gulf, Jordan, Egypt and Tunisia, the authors argue that the rift in the Gulf states over political Islam is one of the most significant challenges to the Gulf Cooperation Council since its establishment.
