This paper explores the motivations behind Russia's annexation of Crimea in early 2014, suggesting that it was a reaction against the West’s expansion toward the territories that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. The authors also examine the implications of the annexation for the West, the Middle East, the international system, international law, and Israel.
