This papers discusses the demographic trends in the Mediterranean and examines the cleavage between the developed and the developing countries of the region. The author also looks at the nature of conflicts and tensions that might result from these changes in population and urges Europe to take effective action to prevent some of the demographically induced problems from emerging in North Africa. The article closes by pointing out Spain's important role as a mediator between Southern Europe and Northern Africa in resolving the conflicts that population growth is likely to produce in the future.
