This document presents a collection of essays discussing the validity of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine in the context of Syria’s civil war and humanitarian emergency. In particular, it presents diverse viewpoints on the impact of non-intervention in Syria and ramifications for the R2P doctrine moving forward. Individual contributions focus on issues such as the future of R2P in light of the Syrian crisis, criteria for moving the R2P doctrine forward in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, reasons for the failure to protect Syrian civilians, the theoretical underpinnings of R2P, and obstacles to consistent implementation and enforcement of R2P.
