This paper argues that following the election of a more eurosceptic, radical and fragmented European Parliament (EP) in the 2014 elections, the EP will find it more difficult to build the necessary majorities to pass legislation and make decisions. The authors also contend that this situation calls for a serious debate on EU citizens' increasing disenchantment with the state of politics in the Union and the need for a common electoral law that promotes governance and democratic standards in the EU.
