This report provides suggestions on how various Spanish institutions should proceed in their dealings with the growing Hispanic community in the US. The author claims that, historically, the US Hispanic community has received little attention from either the Spanish government or society because they were undervalued or unknown as a demographically and sociologically identifiable group. He maintains that this rapprochement is a long-term project, the dual result of approaching and gaining a better understanding of the US population in general and the Hispanic population in particular. The paper concludes with specific suggestions on how to strengthen the ties between Spain and the US Hispanic community on the political, educational, cultural, and economic levels.
