This report discusses the implications of the June 2014 military successes in Iraq of the Islamic militant group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the implications this has for US security policy in the Middle East. Following a brief discussion of the possible outcomes of the ISIL's hostile takeover of parts of Iraq, the authors look at how the US could assist the Iraqi government and cooperate with other countries in the region in order to counter the threat posed by ISIL.
