This brief discusses possible changes to Israel’s strategic approach to Hamas and to terror and violence in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The authors review the actions adopted in the Gaza Strip after the abduction of three Israeli teenagers in June 2014 and advocate continued actions to dismantle Hamas’ civilian, terrorist and political infrastructures. They then discuss possible responses to the escalation in conflict in Gaza and conclude that the preferable one would be a modest and attainable strategic objective, such as isolating and weakening Hamas –and if necessary dismantling its missile and rocket launching capabilities.
