This paper examines the governance of slums, using the Mathare Valley in Kenya as an example. The authors first examine some of the main policy issues in slum governance and policing and then provide an overview of the Mathare Valley slum, including its history, geography, and demographics. The authors also examine crime, crime prevention and policing in the Mathare Valley slum.
