This brief examines Israel's “Operation Protective Edge,” launched in July 2014. The author contends that Israel should avoid a ground operation in the short term. He also argues that mediation should be given a chance and a short unilateral ceasefire be declared to facilitates this. Such measures, he says, will strengthen Israel’s position and buy additional time if a more extensive response becomes necessary.
