This paper explores the root causes of the violence, conflict, and political instability that exists in the Gulf of Guinea area and how the UN, the African Union and ECOWAS have responded to them. Regrettably, the sources of instability are familiar ones – i.e., bad governance, corruption, the failure of social and economic development, etc. The paper, however, balances this initial tale of woe by recommending ways that the above actors might help bring lasting stability to the region.
