This paper is designed to help ombudsmen and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) to better integrate an awareness of gender issues into their security sector oversight. More specifically, it looks at 1) what security sector oversight is; 2) the role of ombudsman institutions and NHRIs in security sector oversight; 3) why gender is important to ombudsmen institutions and NHRIs in security sector oversight; and 4) how gender can be integrated into security sector oversight by ombudsmen institutions and NHRIs.
