This brief discusses the extent to which Israel's actions against Hamas in its 2014 “Operation Protective Edge” are seen as legitimate both in terms of international law and in the eyes of the international community. The author argues that despite Israel’s right to self-defense, proportionality of response to Hamas' attacks and execution of its operations being in accordance with international law, the justification for Israel’s actions in Gaza may be deemed illegitimate by the international community as outcomes are measured by civilian casualties and damage.
