This commentary discusses the territorial disputes in the South China Sea and examines how they can partly be traced back to the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951, which marked the end of hostilities between Japan and the Allied Powers. The author also examines how China's reaction to Russia's annexation of Crimea and Beijing's relations with Moscow could affect the tensions in the region.
