This paper looks at the EU's potential to diversify its gas supply by harnessing sources made available by new technologies. The author first reviews the prospects for shale gas, coal gas and biogas production in the EU. He then argues that the need for the EU to diversify its gas supply, as demonstrated by the crisis in Ukraine, is clear and that it should exploit its own energy sources and develop new technologies to do so.
