This paper examines the need for enhanced security cooperation between middle powers in Indo-Pacific Asia (which it suggests include India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and certain ASEAN countries). The authors argue that Chinese assertiveness and uncertainties over America’s role in the region are leading others to look for alternatives to existing security arrangements. They point out that India, Australia, Japan and others are expanding their security cooperation with each other, but as a next step should create coalitions that would enable them to work together to ensure that changes in US-China relations do not undermine stability in the region.
