This report examines a 2014 proposal to merge the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) and the CrimTrac Agency, an Australian information-sharing service for its police, law enforcement and national security agencies. The author explains the three options available to Australia, 1) do nothing; 2) merge the two agencies, as proposed; or 3) take a staged approach that focuses on fixing the information-sharing and investment impediments first—and then consider a merger if the desired results are not achieved.
