This paper explains why Hezbollah currently enjoys unrivaled political-military power in Lebanon. It also points out, however, that the group’s strength can also be a source of misdirection or weakness. For example, if external aid to Lebanon, which is basically aid to Hezbollah, gets diminished or cut off, radical Sunni unrest could follow, as could a seemingly “useful” let's-distract-the-people conflict with Israel.
