This commentary discusses the appointment of Frans Timmermans as EU Commission Vice-President and his role which entails being in charge of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the rule of law. The authors welcome the fact that this newly created post will exercise a coordination and advisory role over the other two justice and home affairs (JHA) Commissioners. However, they also express a note caution as to whether this new role and its relation to the other two JHA Commissioners can be made to work effectively in practice.
