This paper examines South Africa’s engagements in the UN peacebuilding architecture as well as what opportunities the country has to increase its role in this system. The authors first contend that South Africa has considerable experience in peacebuilding, ranging from its own peaceful transition to democracy to its engagements on the African continent. They then argue that South Africa can play a leading role in the structures of the UN peacebuilding system as the country can promote African views on peacebuilding and contribute to important debates, such as those surrounding the 2015 UN peacebuilding review.
