This paper evaluates the decisions taken during the 2014 NATO summit in Wales and argues that these decisions will enable the Alliance to partially address the security problems on its eastern flank created by Russia. However, the author also contends that NATO has yet to develop an effective strategic response to the strategic changes that were brought about by Russia's annexation of Crimea. Furthermore, he suggests that NATO’s credibility remains vulnerable - something that Russia may use to pursue its broader strategic goals.
