In light of the creation in 2014 of the post of EU Commission First Vice-President with responsibility for Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, this commentary examines why the mandate for this post is extremely challenging and the various questions the establishment of this office has created.
