This commentary looks at the conflict in Ukraine and the ceasefire agreed upon on September 5, 2014. After providing an overview of the causes of the conflict and the reasons for Russia's involvement in it, the author suggests that even if a final agreement is reached in Ukraine, there is no reason to expect an end to the wider conflict between the West and Russia over influence in the region.
