This commentary discusses how and why the Arab Peace Initiative, initially proposed by Saudi Arabia at the Arab League as a way to resolve the Palestine-Israeli conflict, should change following the July-August 2014 Hamas-Israel war. The author argues that to respond to the increase in Hamas' power and regional security threats from Islamic extremists such as the Islamic State, the initiative should no longer push the Palestinians to accept the legitimacy of Israel’s existence in the region, but focus instead on how to reconstruct the Gaza strip.
