This paper argues for the inclusion of ombuds institutions tasked with ensuring gender equality into the armed forces. It contends that ombuds institutions are well placed to support the development of gender-sensitive practices by receiving and investigating complaints, issuing reports and recommendations and by advising and overseeing the armed forces as they move to more fully integrate women within their ranks.
