This paper discusses the characteristics of the structure and the actors of a criminal network involved in protection racketeering in Cape Town, South Africa. Among other factors, the authors highlight 1) the centralized nature of the network; and 2) how this case in South Africa demonstrates how criminal networks can function not only through criminals operating in criminal groups and criminal interactions, but through individuals and firms operating in lawful sectors of society.
