This paper explores the humanitarian impact a detonation of a nuclear weapon would have as a result of the mass displacement of people it would cause. The author suggests that such displaced people would urgently need shelter, uncontaminated food and water, adequate yet specialized healthcare, as well as protection from violence, abuse, and discrimination, both in the short-term and, for many, in the longer-term. He also suggests that meeting these needs would pose a fundamental challenge for any global humanitarian response, with potentially catastrophic consequences.
