This commentary discusses the reasons behind Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to discontinue the South Stream gas pipeline construction project in late 2014. The author also discusses what the decision could mean for the EU and suggests that the Union could benefit as it may be able to secure gas supplies from other countries with less interference from Russia.
