This brief examines the potential consequences of Egypt's decision to establish a security zone in 2014 between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. The author argues that the buffer zone is unlikely to halt militant Islamist infiltrating the Sinai from Gaza. Furthermore, the Egyptian military risks alienating local people by evacuating them from the buffer zone without proper compensation, eventually driving them into the arms of violent anti-state groups.
