This commentary looks at the political, economic and symbolic significance of the Islamic State (IS) minting its own coins. The author argues that by issuing its own coins, IS is taking a symbolic step that could improve its prestige in the eyes of Muslim audiences, strengthen the sense of governance it projects at home and abroad, and consolidate its hold on the territory it controls.
