This report contains four background papers on how Australia and Japan could further their cooperation when it comes to promoting a system based on the rule of law in the Asia-Pacific region. It also contains 1) policy recommendations for both countries' governments on how to strengthen Japan–Australia cooperation on the rule of law in the Asia-Pacific; 2) a speech by Japanese Prime Minister on cooperation among Asia-Pacific countries; 3) a summary of a symposium held in Canberra in June 2014 on how to strengthen a rules-based order in the Asia-Pacific; and 4) a transcript of a speech by the secretary of Australia's Attorney General's Department.
