This paper reviews the unsuccessful attempts to mediate a peaceful resolution to the Libyan conflict in 2011. It concludes that the international community should have learned a major lesson from the experience – i.e., when dealing with national meltdowns such as the one that occurred in Libya, only one mediation effort should exist and, where possible, it should be backed up with appropriate Security Council resolutions.
