This paper explains how the South African government could boost its economic diplomacy through greater cooperation with the private sector. The author notes that state-business relations in South Africa are marked by high levels of mistrust and ad-hoc engagements which prevent efficient economic diplomacy. She suggests that to remedy this situation, the government should identify key business stakeholders to engage with on peacebuilding initiatives and other areas of economic diplomacy. It should also enlist the parastatals, or state-owned enterprises, in this endeavor.
