This report examines the UN-AU relation and how it can be improved to deliver more effective peace operations. The authors look at the evolution of the UN-AU partnership on peace operations since 2005 and analyze their cooperation in several African crisis zones, including those in Mali, Somalia, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. They then examine the major outstanding challenges in this relationship and suggest that the two institutions need to intensify efforts to streamline decision making and expand the nascent joint framework to enhance their partnership.
