In light of Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, this paper compares Russian President Vladimir Putin's approach to world affairs to that of the Austrian Prince Klemens von Metternich (1773-1859). The author contends that like von Metternich, Putin is a conservative imperialist who is seeking to create a balance between the great powers in Europe, while suppressing liberal democratic politics and the aspirations of small nations.
