This report assesses the contributions of political parties to, and their place within, the Afghan political landscape and how they navigate the limitations of their lack of formal political role in the country. The authors also examine the origins, membership and leadership of these political parties as well as the their activities, their strategies and the role they played in Afghanistan's 2014 presidential and provincial elections. The report is based on interviews with members of twelve political parties in the country that were conducted both before and after the 2014 elections.
